  1. Hi Ray,
Thanks so much for the cemetery photo: “Andrew ELDER of Roughan”
Such photos make the person and location feel so real to me,
and certainly motivates me to find out more!

Posting notes which include “ANDREW ELDER of Roughan”
    on my webpages

Using Google.com, searched for CASTLEFIN and COUNTY DONEGAL,
found webpage by EJ BORIS – including ELDER names in County Donegal
    at

and chart with ELDER of Castlefin

JJ Elder – Notes for ELDER chart

    Andrew Elder – “of Roughan”
    Lecky Elder – “(d. aged 4 mos)”
Rebecca Elder – “(d. in childhood)”
Andrew Elder – “of Ashgrove Castlefin, Co. Donegal”
    John J. Elder – “{of Woodstock New Brunswick}”
    Andrew Elder – “(of Montreal)”
Wm. John Tynan – “of Carricknamana, Co. Donegal”
    Stewart Elder – “of Roughan”
    John Caldwell
“Son of Charles, and Grandson of Matthew Caldwell,
    by his wife Elizabeth Sproule”

    Isabella Elder
    pages 10 and 11 titled
“Stuart, Elder, Lecky, and Mathewson Families __
Relatives of Mrs John Caldwell (nee Isabella Elder), of Meenahoney, Castlefin, Co. Donegal, Ireland.”
    http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ejboris/jjelder_p10_11.jpg

Chas. Sproule Caldwell – “of Londonderry; Solicitor”
Robert Blair Elder – “(of Michigan, U.S.)”
There appears to be error in names –
this should probably be simply Robert Elder,
with the son being Robert Blair Elder.

Dr F. H. Mitchell “of Delaware, Ont.”
Clark M. Elder – “of Maplegrove, Brandon, Man.”

ELDER.–A genealogy of the Elder Family in Scotland, Ireland,
Canada, and the United States, is being compiled by J. J. ELDER,
1 Board of Trade, Indianapolis. He would be obliged for
authentic information as to the origin of the name, and the
early history of the family; also for genealogies of the
different branches of the family in the above-mentioned countries.

MATHEWSON and SPROULE.–J.J. ELDER, 1 Board of Trade,
Indianapolis, Ind., has in preparation genealogies of these families.
The Mathewsons crossed from the Hebrides, Scotland, into the
north of Ireland, about two hundred years ago; and from these most of their
descendants have emigrated to the New World, and are settled at Montreal,
Winnipeg. Detroit, New York and many other places on this continent.
The SPROULES, who have frequently intermarried with the Mathewsons,
were Lairds of Cowden in Scotland, from the time of Robert Bruce.
They sold their estates to the Earls of Dundonald, and removed
to County Tyrone, Ireland, where the majority of their descendants
reside, but a portion of them are in the United States. Mr. Elder has
already collected some valuable materials, and invites correspondence.

  2. Hello Nancy, I was looking for inf. on the Elder name. I belong to the McClellan DNA – http://www.familytreedna.com/public/McClellanProject
My group is ” NC & Borders,Scotland”. ( My kit #25146) A Mr. Bob Elder of NE England and his ancestor was from the Border Shire of Scotland. His kit # 30720 has a 67 marker. From what I understand his research does have McClellans in it, but he does not know of how his Elder line DNA connects to McClellan DNA. This question is obvious but where.
Do you know of any other Elder line that connect to McClellans ? None of our group has a connection to England or Scotland and this is a good lead if we could solve it.
    Thanks, Cecil McClellan

  4. Does anyone know what happened to J J Elder’s papers ?

These would evidently be immensely valuable to genealogists.

Have tried for several years to locate these – without success.

  5. Simon,

I’m not familiar with JJ Elder’s papers. Please tell me more about what you’re searching for. I might have a few contacts able to help.
